A PATIENT SUMMER

14 May 2013

Iron manager Brian Laws says a lot of encouraging work has been done behind the scenes as he looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

Two weeks into the summer, Laws admits that the club have been priced out of moves for some of their targets but have moved on to others.

However, he expects the market to get busier as the start of pre-season approaches.

"It's been relatively quiet, I've got to say," Laws explained to Scunthorpe-United.co.uk.

"But that is to be expected at this stage of the season because players are going away on holiday.

"Agents are jostling to put forward proposals regarding player availability.

"But in terms of making any decisions on players it is very early days.

"We're concentrating first and foremost to see if we can secure the players who we have made or are making offers to, to keep at the football club.

"Then if they don't accept or want to go down that avenue with us, we will move on and look at replacements.

"We've already got people in mind and I'm gathering as much information as possible on certain players.

"It's very difficult for us to make offers to other players because we're not in the same ballpark as what they're asking for.

"It will be a patient summer but one I'm hoping will bare some fruit.

"We are looking for a little bit of experience along the way and I'm excited by one or two who I am continually speaking to.

"I'll keep my fingers crossed that maybe one of them at least comes through, which will benefit us not only on the pitch but off it as well.

"There are certain things that are moving around.

"We are working and are continually speaking on the phone to people and agents.

"However, nothing is going to fall into place just yet.

"I've spoken to quite a few players to see what their situation is, and I've also been scared off by some of the agents' pricing because we are miles away.

"We won't be going further with those players because they are getting offers from other clubs.

"We're in League Two and have to cut our cloth accordingly.

"We also have to draw back all the resources we possibly can, because we know the budget will be hit by at least 40 per cent.

"There are teams in League Two and, even in the Blue Square Premier, paying good money, which I think is over the top.

"However, we'll pay what we can. If a player makes a decision on money terms then that's their choice but what we'll do is be patient and make sure we get the right personnel in at the right price to make sure this football club has a good base to work from.

"When you're looking at a certain quality of player, a price gets attached to them and when you can't compete in that price bracket it makes that scenario a bit more difficult.

"However, I'm trying to pull as many strings as we possibly can to try and achieve what we want.

"We've identified what we need but the money is going to dictate whether we can get that, or a small portion of that.

"We're slowly but surely getting there and we will soon get to the point where we can make some firm offers to players.

"At this moment in time though, there is a lot of jostling around."
