A HUGE ROLE TO PLAY

4 June 2013

United manager Brian Laws believes that Michael Collins will play a major role for the club in the 2013-14 season.

Collins penned a new one-year-deal on Tuesday morning and Laws is thrilled to keep the 27-year-old on board.

Laws told Scunthorpe-United.co.uk: “We’ve really enjoyed working with him and to have that calibre of player in our team again next season is fantastic.

“He wants to repay the club for standing by him when he had his injury and to have him right down the spine of our team will create a real buzz around the place.

“I’m surprised that he’s still here because we felt at one stage that we were going to lose him but I’m delighted at the same time.”

With pre-season training set to get underway in just over three weeks, Laws is excited by the prospect of linking up once again with the Halifax product.

Collins was a near ever present in Laws’ line up since he returned to the club last October and he can’t wait to link up with the midfielder again in the next campaign.

He added: “To have a player like him with us in League Two next season is something that I’m certainly looking forward to.

“He’s had to take a pay cut as much as anybody else so great credit has to go to him.

“I think he is one of our key signings and he’s going to be a major player for us, without a doubt.

“We still need to find someone to play alongside him in central midfield but first and foremost, we’re overjoyed that Michael has decided to stay with us.”
