A GREAT WAY TO START

21 June 2013

Iron boss Brian Laws is delighted that the club will open their 2013-14 League Two campaign at Glanford Park, in front of their home supporters.

United kick-off their campaign at home to newly-promoted Mansfield Town on August 3 before travelling to Bristol Rovers the following weekend.

"I am delighted that we are at home. That was one of the things that I was craving for," Laws said.

It is three years since the Iron last won a match on the opening day of the season, that time they beat Reading 2-1 at the Madejski Stadium.

Most managers pride themselves on getting off to a great start in the league as it boosts the side with confidence and gives them a foothold on the division.

Last season it took United until mid-September to grasp their first point of the season and that is something that United boss Laws does not want to see a repeat of this season.

"It is important that we start the season well for the simple reason that in past seasons we have been up against it when we have not started well. If you have a good start it takes you to the higher part of the league," he added.

"It will be a tough game against Mansfield, who were promoted last season.

"The fact that they were big spenders in the Blue Square Premier last season proves it is going to be a tough game."

Laws added: "It is a local match and there will probably be a good gate there, so I expect the atmosphere to be great. Overall I could not have asked for a better start."

Having won the Blue Square Bet Premier last season, Laws knows that Mansfield will be a side full of confidence when they visit Glanford Park on the opening day of the season. However, he believes the buzz and anticipation for football will help the Iron secure their first points of the season.

"Well they are used to winning," he stated.

"You look at their last 18 games of last season and they won about 15 of them so it shows that they are in a good frame of mind.

"They will be loyal to the players that have got them there and they will enjoy coming here to Glanford Park."

In between the opening two league fixtures at the start of August, the Iron travel to Championship side Barnsley in the Capital One Cup.

Last season the Iron were drawn away to Derby County, which ended up being won by United 7-6 on penalties after a 5-5 stalemate after 120 minutes.

This season's draw away at another Championship side and the challenge that awaits does not faze the Iron boss.

Laws said: "It has been a little harder on us in the fact that we have been drawn away from home. I would have liked to have seen Barnsley here, but we have to go there with optimism.

"The pressure is all on Barnsley, they will be expecting to beat us. Sometimes these Capital One Cup games can catch you out if you are not prepared well enough.

He added: "The one thing is we will be approaching it to win it."
