We want to finish well

28 April 2017

United captain Stephen Dawson is fully focused on finishing the Sky Bet League One campaign off positively.

The Iron bring the regular season to an end at Glanford Park on Sunday, with Coventry City the visitors, and Dawson says now is not the time for anyone to be taking their foot of the gas.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Dawson said: “It’s going to be a tough game.

“They’ve done very well since Mark Robins took over, and they haven’t lost many games at all - if only one or two.

“We want to finish well, and we’ve still got a chance of third. It’s not a case of turning up thinking it’s going to be a nice day out, we need to win.

“Come Sunday we’ll look to finish the league off well, and then we’ll look forward to what is to come after.”

Dawson knows that earning all three points will be no easy task though, given the impact made at the Ricoh Arena by new manager Mark Robins.

The Irishman is happy however to be concluding league matters on home turf, and states everyone is determined to deliver a victory for the Scunthorpe faithful.

“They’ll want to finish the season well too, so we're in for a really tough game. However, hopefully we can keep doing what we’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks,” he declared.

“I watched them against Oxford in the Checkatrade Trophy a couple of weeks ago, and they were absolutely magnificent.

“There will be a tough, physical game in store, but I’m delighted to be finishing off in front of our home fans, because it has been an up and down couple of months.”

After racking up four successive wins, the 31-year-old is confident United are getting back to near their best, but he insists that good form will count for little if the campaign isn’t finished successfully.

“I think we’re now starting to show the right sort of form and, no matter who it is after Coventry, I can’t wait,” Dawson stated.

“It’s a long season, with 50 or so games.

“As a group of players you’re not going to play brilliant week in week out. As individuals that will be the case as well.

“With the four wins it breeds confidence, and an atmosphere that we really want to go and finish the job off.”
