U18 SIDE WIN FRIENDLY AT BARNSLEY

13 August 2016

The Iron's Under-18 team won 2-1 in a friendly away at Barnsley on Saturday morning, which was arranged as neither team had an official league fixture.

United fell behind after six minutes when they conceded a goal from a free-kick. As the away side tried to prevent a cross coming into their penalty area, a foul was committed and Barnsley opened the scoring.

The visitors responded well and levelled on 24 minutes when captain Lewis Butroid volleyed home at the near post.

Both teams had chances and the Iron had to defend resolutely at times to keep the home team out.

The Iron's youngsters got the winner with ten minutes remaining, from a training ground set-piece which saw Leslie Sackey thunder his effort in to the back of the goal after good play from Harvey Ablett.

With only minutes remaining, Ablett went close to scoring but he fired his effort wide of the near post.

Academy manager Tony Daws said: "Our boys were excellent today all over the pitch, both when we had the ball but importantly when we didn't have the ball. We worked really hard and as a consequence, our team played very well. We must now maintain this standard every game that we play. Well done lads."
