U18 SIDE LOSE OUT IN CUP CLASH

10 September 2016

The Iron's U18 side lost 1-0 to Accrington Stanley in the Youth Alliance Cup on Saturday morning.

After a goalless first half, the visitors took the lead on 70 minutes from a long throw.

Iron keeper Adam Kelsey had previously dived bravely at the feet of an Accrington striker but injured his knee in the process and had to be replaced in goal by U16 keeper Sam Richies, making his debut.

The throw in wasn't dealt with and the visitors tucked the ball away at the far post.

United forced their way back into it and had chances to level late on but were not able to find the target.

Academy manager Tony Daws said: "Adam was very brave diving at feet, hopefully his injury won't be serious. Today we never really got going and were below the level that we have played at in previous games. The lads will bounce back."

Iron team: Kelsey (Richie, 68), McMichael, Bartholomew, Porter (Allasan, 74), Lilley, Sackey, Busby, Hornshaw, Dean Atkinson (Train, 85), Barmby (Ablett, 86), Sithole.
