U18 SIDE EDGED OUT AT NOTTS COUNTY

6 August 2016

The Iron's U18 side lost 2-1 against Notts County in their season opener at Highfields, Nottingham.

United went 1-0 down on 12 minutes when County broke directly down their right through striker Clayton-Naute, his cross was half cleared to the edge of the box by the Iron where it was turned home by Magpies captain Brownhill.

The Iron regrouped and deservedly levelled on 25 minutes. Lewis McMichael's long throw was flicked on by Leslie Sackey and although County cleared to the edge of their penalty area, new first year apprentice Kyle Porter was on hand to fire home left footed.

Chances came and went at both ends until County converted on the counter attack. A long ball in behind United's defence caught them square and the home team striker Gibbons outpaced his man before his cross was turned in at the near post.

United had two good chances to score - firstly when David Allasan turned in front of goal but unfortunately his shot didn't have the power to beat the home keeper.

Shortly afterwards, captain Lewis Butroid picked out James Dean-Atkinson at the far post but the Notts keeper was again well positioned to make the save.

Academy Manager Tony Daws said: "Our lads worked hard but on the day we didn't play to the high levels that we have shown during some of the pre season games. It's all a learning curve for the boys."

Team: Parker, McMichael, Butroid, Sithole, Appleby (Lilley, 58), Sackey, Porter, Hornshaw, Dean Atkinson (Busby, 84), Allasan, Train (Ablett, 68).
Unused substitute: Kelsey.
