The momentum factor is massive

24 April 2017

Conor Townsend was pleased with both the Iron’s offensive and defensive display in their 2-1 victory over Swindon Town.

Strikes from Murray Wallace and Sam Mantom put United in the driving seat at the County Ground and, despite Rohan Ince halving the deficit late on, Graham Alexander’s side held on impressively.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Townsend said: “We knew it was going to be a tough place to play at, and I think the early goal settled us.

“They had a lot of possession, but we were quite comfortable and they didn’t do much with it. We then got the second which made it game over really.

“They then had a bit of a spell in which they got the goal, but I though we stood up at the end and defended well.

“At the end they threw a lot of bodies into the box, and we stood up to it and defended well - like we have been doing.”

The full-back felt things perhaps should have been wrapped up sooner, but was encouraged by the number of chances which were manufactured.

“To be honest we maybe could have had a few more, and we need to be a lot more ruthless,” he declared.

“We’re getting back to where we were at the start of the season, where we are creating chances and scoring goals a bit more freely.

“It’s just a confidence thing. As a team we’re a lot more confident than we were, and that just comes with winning games and playing well.”

The win saw Townsend and his team-mates rack up four successive league triumphs for the first time this season, and the 24-year-old says form is being hit at exactly the right time.

“We need to have some momentum going into the play-offs, which is something we’ve all spoken about,” he stated.

“Hopefully we can build on this next week, and go into the play-offs with five victories on the spin.

“The momentum factor is massive and, if we can get another win, it’ll only build on it.”
