Toney eyes five wins in a row

28 April 2017

Ivan Toney is targeting a fifth successive league victory when the Iron host Coventry City on Sunday.

Toney believes a positive run of form is essential heading into the play-offs and, with that in mind, the Newcastle loanee stated another three points are crucial this weekend.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Toney said: “Hopefully we can finish strong going into the play-offs. The three points is what we’ll all be going out to get, and hopefully we can manage to do that.

“It’s very important to go into the play-offs strong - you want to be winning every game and doing well.

“We have been doing that, so hopefully that can continue, and we can put ourselves in a very strong position.

“The games weren’t going our way, but we managed to turn things around, and that’s come from hard work from everyone on the training ground and at the club.”

The 21-year-old knows the task won’t be a straightforward one though, but emphasised the need to finish the regular season on a high in front of the Glanford Park faithful.

Toney declared: “I’m sure every club would like to finish with a home game, and we’re lucky enough to have got that. Finishing off with a win for the fans would be great.

“They (Coventry City) are a strong side, and every side wants to win games regardless of where they are.

“We’ve got to go into the game with the right frame of mind, like we have been doing, and the three points are up for grabs for both sides.”

Personally, Toney is in the middle of a real purple patch in terms of goalscoring, with five strikes in his last six outings.

He felt it was just a matter of time before the goals eventually came, however he insists on not resting on his laurels, and expressed his desire to chip in with more prior to the end of the campaign.

“The first goal is the hardest one to get,” he explained.

“Once you do manage to get one, you do get more chances to get a couple more, and I’ve managed to do that at the right stage.

“The ‘keeper made a good save there (against Swindon Town), but hopefully I can redeem myself this Sunday.”

Whether in a rich scoring vein or not, the forward’s main concern is always for the benefit of the team, and to marry both results and performances together is a welcome bonus in his eyes.

“I’m enjoying being in a winning side, and as a striker you want to be scoring goals. However, if I’m not doing that, I just want to win the match,” he stated.

“I’m very excited, but we’ve just got to go one step at a time. We’ve got a job to do on Sunday, so hopefully we can get the three points there, and go into the play-offs strong.”
