THROUGH TO THE NEXT ROUND, ALL THAT MATTERS

8 December 2016

Iron midfielder Sam Mantom was delighted to get through to the next round of the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday night.

United progressed to the next phase of the competition with a penalty shoot-out victory over Morecambe at Glanford Park, and Mantom stated the most important thing was reaching the next stage of the tournament.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Mantom said: “We started the game superbly well and got the goal early on.

“We really took the game to them in the first ten minutes, but took our foot off the gas and they got their goal from a set-piece.

“We’re through. We’ll work on things in training on Thursday and get ready for Saturday.

“We want to win every game we play, we’ve won the game tonight and we’re through to the next round, which is all that matters.”

The 24-year-old scored his second goal in Scunthorpe colours against the Shrimps, as he crashed the ball home, early into proceedings.

Mantom though wants to push on, and he hopes he can find the net on more occasions throughout the campaign.

“I’m always looking to get goals. I scored a few last season, and I need to add more to the tally this season,” he stated.

“When you hit them like that, they’re the best ones, but I’ll happily take a tap-in.

“It’s nice to have got my second. Now I want to keep improving and get more in the team, which is what I’ll try to do.”

Graham Alexander’s side return to league action on Saturday when they take on Rochdale at Spotland - a game Mantom is going into full of confidence.

“We’re looking forward to the game because it’s going to be a big one for us, and it’s one we’re looking to go and stamp our authority on,” Mantom insisted.
