THE FIGHT AND HUNGER IS STILL IN EVERYBODY

20 February 2017

Scunthorpe striker Paddy Madden believes team spirit was instrumental in taking a point out of Saturday’s clash with Sheffield United.

The Iron were reduced to ten men early on in the second period at Bramall Lane with the scoreline level at 1-1, after Harry Toffolo was dismissed for a second booking.

However, that was how it would stay and, Madden says the resolve shown, particularly after Toffolo had been given his marching orders was superb.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Madden said: “It’s a good point - we can take a lot of positives out of it.

“We were of course down to ten men for the last 40 minutes, and the lads dug deep to find that extra gear which got us a valuable point.

“To get promoted you need that bit of fight about you.

“It was of course a negative for us that Toff’s (Harry Toffolo) got sent off, but you can take the positives out of it as well, because you can see the fight and hunger is still in everybody.”

The Irishman’s composed close range finish got the scoring underway, as he tucked home a Stephen Dawson cross, minutes after the restart.

Madden was naturally delighted with the strike, a strike which brought up a milestone of 100 career goals.

Madden declared: “They’re the ones I score all of the time.

“Once in a blue moon you’ll see me score a 30 yard curler, but they’re not my kind of goals.

“The one I scored is what I’ve scored all of my career. In the box, on my toes and in the right spot to tap it in.”

Moving forward, the 26-year-old feels a vast amount of belief and confidence can be drawn from the performance against the Blades.

“To come to Bramall Lane, play the last 40 minutes with ten men, and hang on to get a good point is very positive,” he stated.

“There’s a lot of fight in a lot of people, which is good.

“When you go down to ten men, you’d probably think they’d go on and win comfortably, but that’s the characters we have in the dressing room.”
