Speaking after the Iron’s 4-1 victory over Walsall, midfielder Neal Bishop stated he and his teammates have now set a standard of performance which they have to maintain.
United put the Saddlers to the sword on Tuesday night, but Bishop says it’s all about building on the win.
Bishop told The Iron PlayerHD: “Over a ninety minute period I think that’s as dominant as we have been all season.
“That’s got to be the mark for every week now. We’re an ambitious group, we’re certainly a level headed group, and there’ll be no one getting carried away.
“We’ll take the positives, we’ll look at what we could have done better, and we’ll look to improve and go again on Saturday.”
The 35-year-old scored Scunthorpe’s third, two minutes after the break, a goal he felt was netted at a crucial time in the match and on a significant milestone evening for himself. The Stockton-born midfielder reached 500 career starts along with 100 Scunthorpe starts on the same evening and capped his performance with a terrific strike.
He too had a word on ‘keeper Luke Daniels, who preserved the visitors’ lead on the stroke of half time with a superb save to deny forward Simeon Jackson.
“Luke Daniels pulled out a top draw save to keep us 2-1 up. If that goes in, they go in at half time with their tails up, and at 2-2 it’s a different game,” he stated.
“We scored at the perfect time for us at the start of the second half, and it took the wind out of their sails.
“They would have come out of the dressing room fired up for a big fifteen or twenty minutes, and that goal gave us that two goal cushion, and that bit of breathing space, which knocked their crowd.”
Bishop insisted the focus must now shift to Saturday’s top of the table away clash with Bury at Gigg Lane.
He revealed there’s an evidently positive mood in the camp, and stated they’ll be going into the game with the Shakers in a confident mood.
“The games come thick and fast in this league, and there’s another big one on Saturday,” he added.
“It’ll soon be forgotten about. This is a great result, but it’s the past now, it’s gone, and we’ll put it to bed.
“We’ll move onto Saturday which is another massive test, as Bury are flying. So it’s going to be a great test of our resolve going there, but one we’re looking forward to immensely.”
