REPORT: STAMFORD AFC 0-3 IRON

8 July 2016

United won 3-0 at Stamford AFC in their first game of pre-season on Friday evening.

Duane Holmes scored a well-taken brace in the first half, while Paddy Madden added a third goal early in the second period.

The Iron got the game underway and tried to press in the opening minutes. They registered their first attempt on goal with three minutes on the clock, as Luke Williams has a shot blocked on the edge of the area.

Minutes later, Kevin van Veen headed over the crossbar from close range, following Stephen Dawson's delivery from the left.

On seven minutes, there was a chance for the hosts, as Luke Daniels was forced into a smart save from a far post header.

United kept probing at the other end and saw efforts by van Veen blocked.

The visitors took the lead on 12 minutes through a great strike from Holmes, who took aim from the edge of the box, and fired the ball into the corner of the net.

Three minutes later, Scunthorpe came close to adding a second as Williams sent over a dangerous cross from the right flank but the Iron men in the box couldn't get on the end of it.

In the 21st minute, Holmes had another effort - beating his man on the edge of the area before striking an effort wide.

Four minutes later, van Veen was the next to try his luck, spinning and shooting from just inside the area.

On 32 minutes, Stamford went very close to getting themselves back level. However, the left footed strike flashed just over the crossbar.

In the 36th minute, Holmes hit the post with a right-footed effort as United came close to doubling their lead.

They then hit the woodwork again five minutes later, when Williams' effort was tipped onto the post by the home goalkeeper.

However, the lead was extended moments before half-time, as Holmes struck again - driving his effort underneath the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

It was a whole different Iron side in the second half and, after some probing, they added a third on 56 minutes. Following a low cross from the right by Levi Sutton, Madden was on hand to stab home from close range.

In the 61st minute, Madden almost turned provider for Kyle Wootton, but his square ball was just fractionally overhit for the striker to run on to.

Four minutes later, there was a great save from Joe Anyon to preserve United's three goal advantage, as he dived to his right to palm a free-kick away. Moments late, Anyon was beaten by a close range effort but the flag was raised for offside.

Scunthorpe kept control of the game and, on 82 minutes, there was some lovely footwork from Hakeeb Adelakun to wriggle out of a tight spot in the Stamford penalty area, but he was ultimately frustrated as the hosts cleared. It proved the last action of note.

Next up for the Iron is a journey down to Stansted Airport, where they will stay in a hotel overnight before heading off to Austria for a week-long training camp early on Saturday morning.

IRON FIRST HALF TEAM: Daniels, Laird, Mirfin, Williams, Dawson, van Veen, Bishop, Hopper, Holmes, Goode, Clarke.

IRON SECOND HALF TEAM: Anyon, Wiseman, King, Wallace, Madden, Morris, Adelakun, Townsend, Ness, Wootton, Sutton.
