REPORT: IRON U18'S 3-0 GRIMSBY TOWN U18'S

6 December 2016

The Iron's academy side romped to a 3-0 home victory over local rivals Grimsby Town on Saturday morning.

The game, played at Appleby Frodingham, backed up the 2-0 victory over the Mariners that United had secured in the first round of the FA Youth Cup last month.

The Iron’s first goal was scored on 6 minutes when James Dean-Atkinson received a pass as he ran in behind the opponent’s defence before volleying past the Town keeper.

On 37 minutes that lead was doubled as Dean-Atkinson went for a cross in the box and was upended by the visiting team’s goalkeeper. The forward dusted himself down to take the spot kick himself and duly fired home to double United’s lead.

Shortly after George Barmby went very close to stretching the lead further but his effort was well saved. United had the ball in the net once more before the interval after a corner, but that effort was ruled out for offside with the Iron taking a 2-0 lead into half time.

It didn't take long for a third goal to come though with United starting the second half well and extending their advantage on 51 minutes.

A well worked corner routine found Kyle Porter who fired home from 12-yards out to put the Iron in to a commanding lead.

From there, the side controlled the second half and went on to make it two wins out of two having scored 10 goals without reply.

Academy Manager Tony Daws said: "Our players were excellent today – well played and well done to them all."

IRON: Kelsey, McMichael, Butroid (C) (Bartholomew, 88), Porter (Ablett, 85), Lilley, Sackey, Busby, Hornshaw, Barmby, Dean-Atkinson, Sithole (Train, 78).
