The Iron's Under-18 side lost 2-1 in a home clash against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.
United started the game really well and at a high tempo. They deservedly took the lead on 14 minutes.A good move down the left saw the ball pulled back to George Hornshaw, who fired home from the edge of the Oldham penalty area.
United created more chances but couldn't quite find the final touch that their approach play provided.
However, on 36 minutes, the Latics drew level when the ball was sprayed out to the Oldham left. United failed to stop the cross from coming into their box and the visitors swept the ball home to level the scores for half-time.
The strong wind was proving a problem for the Iron as they kicked into it in the second half.
Clearances were falling short and the visitors were sending the ball back to the Iron's goal.
On 63 minutes, United gave a free-kick away in a wide position just inside their own half.
Oldham's big players filled the penalty area before heading the ball across United's six-yard box where it was bungled over the line.
The Iron's youngsters all appealed vociferously for handball but the referee turned their appeals down and the goal proved to be the difference between the two teams.
After the game, United Academy Manager Tony Daws said: "It was a really tough, physical battle for us today against a very big but good Oldham team.
"Our lads played some excellent football in the first half but we are disappointed in the two goals that we conceded as they were both preventable. There are lots of positives to take from the game."
