LILLEY NETS IN UNDER-18 LOSS

25 March 2017

The Iron's Under-18 side were beaten 2-1 by Notts County at Appleby-Frodingham on Saturday.

A good cross on 10 minutes from Lewis McMichael found Joe Busby in space ten yards out but his header was straight at County's keeper.

McMichael was forward again on 17 minutes. This time he picked out David Allasan with an excellent cross, but again the header was straight at the visiting goalkeeper.

Captain Lewis Butroid shot narrowly wide after 26 minutes and at this stage the Iron were dictating the game.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, United thought they had got the breakthrough. Central midfielder George Hornshaw burst forward and was brought down in the penalty area. Leslie Sackey stepped forward to take the penalty but put his effort over the crossbar with almost the last kick of the first half.

On 52 minutes, a long throw from McMichael was flicked on by Harvey Ablett and County's goalkeeper did well to tip the ball over the bar.

McMichael took the corner and his well-flighted ball in found the head of Sam Lilley at the far post and the central defender's header put the Iron into the lead.

United were pegged back on the hour as a speculative long range effort found its way through to level.

With ten minutes remaining, United conceded a free-kick centrally on the edge of their box. The resulting effort nestled in to the bottom corner to win the game for the visitors.
