IT'S WHAT YOU DREAM OF IN FOOTBALL

15 March 2017

Matt Crooks described his stoppage winner against Rochdale as “what you dream of in football”.

United battled back from a goal down to emerge 2-1 victors over Keith Hill’s side at Glanford Park, with Crooks popping up with a sumptuous strike as full-time loomed.

The Rangers loanee was evidently delighted to have had a hand in securing all three points for his side, and he added it was a terrific bonus to do it on home turf also.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Crooks said: “That’s what you dream of in football - last minute goals in front of your own fans.

“When I saw it dropping I thought concentrate on the ball and try to hit as cleanly as I could. I was too tired to do anything else, so I just went for the shot, and it went in.”

Crooks highlighted the fighting spirit which the squad displayed throughout, after what he admitted was a frustrating opening period.

“We’ve probably put in better performances than that over the past few games, but we got the three points and that’s the main thing,” Crooks stated.

“We dug in. The first half wasn’t how we wanted it to go, but we dug in there in the second half and fought until the end.

“We’ve shown some character tonight, and we stuck together as a team.”

An away trip to face Oxford United on Saturday now lies in wait for Crooks and his team-mates, and the midfielder emphasised the need to back Tuesday night’s win up.

“Hopefully we can build on this now, take it into the few games and create some more wins,” he declared.

“We have been on a bad run of games recently, but that can easily turn the other way.

“There’s still a lot of games to go and a lot of points to be won, so hopefully we can win as many as we can.

“We’ve got to remain focused on the next game now. They’re all big games now, so we’ve got to aim for three points in every fixture and see how many we can pick up.”
