IRON YOUTH EDGED OUT AT BARNSLEY

26 July 2016

The Iron's academy side were edged out in an entertaining 2-1 defeat against Barnsley.

The Iron started the game at a really high tempo and put the home team under pressure from the first whistle.

After forcing numerous corners, it was Scunthorpe who took the lead on 13 minutes when a well-flighted corner from George Hornshaw saw Leslie Sackey head powerfully home.

Barnsley levelled on 22 minutes when a cross to the far post was headed home by the home team.

On the stroke of half time the Iron should have retaken the lead when they were unlucky to see Alex Appleby's effort come back off the post.

United started the second half with real pace and purpose about their play and Nate Sithole was inches away from scoring as he tried to get on the end of a cross to the far post.

However the Tykes went in front on 48 minutes when a ball squeezed through United's rearguard was turned home before keeper Adam Kelsey could get there.

The visitors came back again and should have equalised on 50 minutes when David Allasan went through but with only the keeper to beat the striker delayed his effort giving the keeper time to make the save.

Three minutes later United midfielder Kyle Porter headed against the Barnsley crossbar with the home team shot stopper well beaten.

Allasan went through again on 66 minutes but again delayed his shot allowing the Barnsley keeper to dive well at his feet.

Academy Manager Tony Daws said: "The way in which our lads played today was excellent both in and out of possession just like we were on Saturday at Walsall. Today we created countless good goal scoring opportunities but just need to be more clinical in front of goal.

"Overall, there were lots and lots of good things to take from today's game so we are very pleased with our lads".
