The club are saddened to learn of the passing of former player John "Merfyn" Jones, aged 85.
The Bangor-born winger arrived at the club in August 1953 from Liverpool and would go onto make 240 league appearances with a further 23 in the FA Cup, netting a total of 33 goals, 27 of which in the league.
He would remain with United for six years before departing for Crewe Alexandra in June 1959.
In an interview with Jones, he spoke of his career highlights, writing: "Every player likes to score goals!
"My memorable moment would be the rain of goals against Pompey in the FA Cup Fifth Round, while the proudest would be being picked for my Junior International cap against Scotland. I was in the RAF at the time doing National Service."
Jones would score a total of three goals against Portsmouth in the FA Cup in 1953/54, one in the original home tie and a brace in the replay at Fratton Park to send the game to a second replay at Highbury.
In 1954/55, he had the honour of representing Scunthorpe to play in the Inter League game for Division Three North v South at Elm Park in one of a series of only six ties between 1955 and 1958.
On a Facebook post, which mentioned the Iron, his nephew John Dexter Jones wrote: "He was a brilliant bloke.
"Uncle John played a season at Bangor City before being spotted and transferred to Liverpool. He spent a few years at the Reds without ever commanding a regular first team place and was transferred to Scunthorpe United where he enjoyed a very productive career.
"Once of the smallest ever footballers in the Football League (a testament to his skills) he was a gentle man, liked by everyone who knew him."
