HORNSHAW SCORES WINNER AS U18 SIDE SEE OFF BRADFORD

10 October 2016

The Iron's Under-18 side were 1-0 winners in their home clash against Bradford City on Saturday.

It was a hard-fought game, and United got the goal just before half-time.

George Hornshaw made a good run beyond the strikers from midfield, to get on the end of a cross at the near post and flick the ball past the goalkeeper.

"George does that well, he gets into the box and onto the end of things, and is our leading scorer at the moment from midfield," said academy manager Tony Daws.

Bradford defended deep in the first half but, as they tried to get back into the game, had to open up in the second period, which left a few more gaps for the Iron to try and exploit.

"We created a few more chances in the second half, which we're a little disappointed we didn't take," he said.

"There were a couple of one-versus-ones with the goalkeeper and crosses across goal that we maybe could have got on the end of.

"Bradford always have a strong group, and a large catchment area to select players from. Two years out of the last three, they've won the Youth Alliance League.

"We were pleased to get a win, because it was a tough game."

Iron team: Kelsey, McMichael, Bartholomew, Porter (Train, 68), Lilley, Sackey, Busby, Hornshaw, Dean-Atkinson, Allasan (Barmby, 53), Sithole (Ablett, 88).
