United’s centre-back Charlie Goode was pleased to make his first start of the season, but was as equally disappointed to see his side bow out of the EFL Cup in the second round to Bristol City.
The Championship away side took the lead at Glanford Park through Bobby Reid just after the half hour mark, and continued to threat the Iron backline throughout the first period.
United came back into the game in the second half and deservedly got an equaliser from the penalty spot, as Josh Morris scored his fifth goal of the season.
The game headed into extra time, and was decided in the first period of it when the impressive Tammy Abraham found time to control one of his teammates shots, before firing into the top of the net.
“We’ve worked very hard throughout the game,” Goode told The Iron PlayerHD.
"We’ve had our chances too. They’ve a good side in the Championship and they’ve got a lot of quality. I thought we showed a lot of quality at times ourselves and we could have taken it to penalties in extra time.”
The 21-year-old believes there were plenty of positives to take from the game, but was disappointed by the goals that were conceded.
“(There were) a lot of positives, and not really any major negatives, so we will take that performance into the weekend, and we can be happy other than the result," he continued.
“As a defender clean sheets are massive, and that’s what you want on the pitch as soon as you go on it.
“It’s frustrating because I thought we could have done better with the goals. Even though they were the better side we could have had more ourselves, and we could have easily taken ourselves through.” He stated."
Goode has found first team opportunities hard to come by recently, with David Mirfin and Murray Wallace forming a solid central defensive partnership. With great compliments to Goode’s attitude, he stated he hasn’t been frustrated by the lack of games and will always be a team player.
“It’s been hard but the back line has been massive for us, even from the back end of last season when we just missed out on the play-offs," he stated.
“We’re not conceding many, and we’re scoring plenty so I can’t do anything but congratulate the boys when they come off, and wait for my chance like I did tonight.”
Despite the loss, Goode was deservedly seen as the fans ‘Man of the Match, as voted on Twitter, something he was grateful for.
“You’re always trying to do well for the team and the fans, and I think it will be a big season for us. I’m hoping to play a big part in it and hopefully we can push for the top six.”
The loss didn’t seem to have had a negative effect on the dressing room on the night, as the players sensed that had things gone their way at stages of the second half it could have indeed been a different end result.
The defender was keen to further reiterate just how high the confidence is in the Iron camp: “Although we’ve lost tonight there’s still a lot of confidence in the group and we’re unbeaten in the league.
“We want to keep that run going and hopefully we can pick up a few more points this weekend.”
