DAWSON LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK

30 August 2016

United captain Stephen Dawson says the squad will be aiming to right the wrongs of the away defeat at Port Vale as quickly as possible.

The Iron slipped to a 3-1 loss at Vale Park, but Dawson is optimistic things can be set right in Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy clash with Middlesbrough.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Dawson said: “It was difficult but, in saying that, we probably weren’t at the races on Saturday.

“We’re disappointed with the performance, and it was a tough last 10 or 15 minutes for the boys - where we had to dig deep.

“We’ll dust ourselves down, and we’ll go again on Tuesday night. The fans were great again, but we know where we need to improve.”

He stated the need to remain upbeat, and move on from the result by getting back to winning ways against Boro.

“We’re hurting, but we’ve got to be positive. I still think it’s a good start, and things aren’t going to be won or lost on Saturday's performance, so we have to remain positive,” he stated.

“I’ve said for the last couple of weeks that we can’t get too excited when we win, and not to get too low when we suffer a defeat. It’s our first defeat in a long time, and we’ll bounce back."

On a positive note, Paddy Madden made his first competitive appearance since the final day of last season - something which pleased the midfielder.

“It was brilliant to see Paddy (Madden) come on, and Sam (Mantom) too, who I thought did well when he came on," he added.

“The game next week (the postponed fixture against Charlton Athletic) is probably a blessing in disguise, because it gets the squad all back up, and gives us two solid weeks of training."
