CROOKS LOOKS TO BUILD ON GOOD PERFORMANCE

6 March 2017

Midfielder Matt Crooks was keen to take the plus points out of United’s home loss to Fleetwood Town.

United were defeated 2-0 by the Cod Army at Glanford Park and, moving forward, the Rangers loanee feels there’s things to build on.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Crooks said: “Performance-wise, I thought we were very good.

“We just couldn’t put the ball in the net and that’s what football is all about - unfortunately we didn’t do that.

“Taking positives from the game, we have played very well and we did create chances.

“If we play like that every week until the end of the season we’ll give ourselves a very good chance of promotion.”

The Iron attempted to seize the initiative early on, with Graham Alexander’s side creating several openings.

Crooks believes things could have turned out different had Scunthorpe found the all important breakthrough.

“Goals change games in football, and it gives you momentum going forward,” explained Crooks.

“If one of those chances did go in then it could have been three or four, but it didn’t happen unfortunately.”

The 23-year-old went close to finding the net himself, but Fleetwood ‘keeper Alex Cairns pulled off a fine save to repel his close-range header.

Reflecting on that and his own personal display, Crooks is sure there’s more to come. However, he stated he was satisfied with the performance he put in.

“It was a good save. I’d always back myself to score there, but you’ve got to give the ‘keeper credit there - it was a good save,” he stated.

“I’ve always wanted play and help the team get promotion.

“I thought I did okay. There were a couple of loose passes where I thought I could have kept the ball better, but overall I thought I did well.’

United now head to Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night, and Crooks says there’s plenty to be optimistic about heading into the clash at the Valley.

“We’ve got to go there with confidence now, because we’ve shown that we can play and Fleetwood have been on a good run coming into this game,” the midfielder highlighted.

“I thought we pretty much controlled things. We kept them at bay and, apart from their two shots, I can’t remember them having a good amount of possession in our half.”
