Reflecting on the Iron’s defeat to Hull City, defender David Mirfin believes there is plenty to take from the match.
United were beaten 2-0 by the Tigers at Glanford Park but, despite this, Mirfin feels everyone in the squad will have enjoyed the chance to test themselves against Premier League opposition.Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Mirfin said: “As a workout and the physical aspect of it, I think it was a good game.
“No injuries have come from it. The result is disappointing but, like the gaffer touched on, it’s all about building up to Bristol Rovers on the opening day of the season.
“It’s good to test yourself against players like that, but we know equally that the type of game we’re going to play in League One is going to be slightly different to what we played today.”
Assessing pre-season as a whole so far, the 31-year-old says things are shaping up well ahead of the first game of the campaign, at home to Bristol Rovers.
“I think we’re heading in the right direction in where we want to be come that first week, and I think the fact the games we’re playing are going Premier League, Championship and League Two is good,” he stated.
“Because I think the Hartlepool is going to be more relevant as to what we’re going to face against Bristol Rovers, than playing Hull City. So it’s good in terms of how the games are falling."
Rotherham United are the Iron’s next opponents, when they visit Glanford Park on Tuesday night, and Mirfin is expecting a much more physical affair compared to the clash with the Tigers.
He continued: "I wouldn’t say it’s going to be very different, I think it’s going to be slightly more of what we’re used to, but still with that higher quality.
“Physically I believe it’s going to be a really good test for us, and tactically if we can impose our game and how we want to play against Bristol Rovers a little bit more, then even better.”
