Build on the momentum

28 April 2017

Iron defender Murray Wallace wants to build on the momentum generated by four successive league victories, in this weekend’s clash with Coventry City.

Sunday’s encounter is United’s last of the regular season and, with the play-offs on the horizon, Wallace believes another win is imperative.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Wallace said: “The fans have been brilliant all season, so it’ll be nice to give them something to cheer.

“It’s important to keep the confidence up, because we don’t want to go backwards or anything like that. It’s really important that we go into the play-offs with confidence.

“With them (Coventry City) going down, they’ll want to finish well, and Mark Robins will want to get a win on his return here.”

Wallace believes a lot of belief can be taken from those run of wins, given the nature of opponent which Graham Alexander’s men have faced in recent weeks.

“It’s good to get that momentum back, and get back to winning ways after having a bit of a bad patch,” he explained.

“It was frustrating, because we did go through quite a bad patch, and even towards the end of that I did feel we were putting in performances that deserved wins.

“It did feel like it was coming, but nothing is guaranteed in football, and you need to fight for every victory.

“To beat the teams we have has been impressive too, because they’re fighting for their lives, and they’ve been tough games.”

Despite it not being mathematically possible for Wallace and his Scunthorpe team-mates to climb into second spot, the Scot says there are still plenty of incentives for going out and striving for maximum points.

“We were a little disappointed after the other results at the weekend meant that we could no longer get that second spot,” he declared.

“However, we’ve still got a chance of getting third, and we definitely want to finish at least fourth. It’s important we feel that we do that, and get a home tie for the second leg.”
