Iron manager Graham Alexander described his players as “brilliant from minute one” following the 3-0 victory over Chesterfield.
Second-half goals from Josh Morris, Kevin van Veen and Sam Mantom secured the points after what was a thoroughly impressive performance from United.Evidently delighted with the outing, Alexander told The Iron PlayerHD: “The players were brilliant from minute one.
“They were committed to the game, composed, made the right decisions and that’s what it takes to win like that.
“When you’re on top, you hope to score the goal that gets the breakthrough but sometimes you have to be patient and that’s what we had to do.
“It’s not easy coming to Chesterfield, or any team in this division as Tuesday showed us, so you have to earn the right and we did that in the first-half.
“Once we got the breakthrough in the second-half, we continued on the level of performance we were producing and it was great to see the players go out there, commit to everything and enjoy being part of this team.
“To put on a performance like that and win 3-0 away is a great testament to the players.”
The opener arrived right after half-time as Morris’ teasing free-kick evaded everybody in the box before Dutchman van Veen doubled Scunthorpe’s advantage with a drilled finish.
Substitute Sam Mantom then bagged his first goal in Iron colours to complete a successful afternoon and the boss was full of praise for the attacking threat his side posed.
“He (Morris) puts it in dangerous areas so if people miss it, it’s on target and he’s got great delivery,” Alexander continued.
“It takes players in the box to commit to that as well to make it difficult for the defending team and it put us deservedly 1-0 up.
“We continued to keep our foot on the floor and from an attacking point of view, the energy and interplay was superb to watch.
“I thought the front four would cause them problems with their pace and movement and that brought about the second goal especially.
“Kev hit the target with power and it was a great finish, to give us that little cushion.
“I’m also really chuffed for Sam to get on the scoresheet because he works so hard and he’s been unlucky with injury in pre-season but we know his quality.
“We brought him here because he’s a midfielder who can score goals and it was a really assured finish.”
During a fixture full of positives, including a clean sheet, Alexander also hailed youngster Levi Sutton, who was making his first league start for the club.
Heaping acclaim on Sutton and the defensive unit in general, the manager also issued an update on Scott Wiseman’s condition.
He added: “We had to defend well. Chesterfield have threats with numerous attacking players but I thought the defenders and the midfielders in front of them really made it difficult.
“When Luke (Daniels) was called upon, he dealt with everything in the right way and gave the team that composure.
“Levi epitomised the whole team today and I thought he was superb from his very first touch.
“He was aggressive in his defending and up against an excellent player today but didn’t give him a sniff.
“When he was on the ball, he picked out the right pass at the right time and for a league debut in a position he hasn’t played much before, I thought he was superb.
“Wisey picked up a strange knock on Tuesday that has made his leg swell up and he can’t bend it fully at the moment.
“It’s quite a concern because we couldn’t really diagnose it correctly so we’ll see how that pans out in the next few days.”
