BIG MATCH PREVIEW: MIDDLESBROUGH (H)

30 August 2016

The Iron welcome a Middlesbrough side to Glanford Park, in the first of three Checkatrade Trophy group stage clashes.

Graham Alexander’s men will be seeking a quick response to their away defeat at the hands of Port Vale on Saturday, ahead of the upcoming international break.

Manager Alexander says striker Kevin van Veen has recovered from the knock he sustained at Vale Park on Saturday, and expects him to be a part of the squad to face Boro.

After making his return to the first time fold at the weekend, Paddy Madden will once again be involved in one way or another, as too will Sam Mantom, who came off the bench against the Valiants.

Looking longer term, Alexander believes it won’t be too long before Jamie Ness and Luke Williams are back in contention for selection, with the United boss earmarking the match with Southend United on September 10 as a possible return date for the pair.

Defender Dael Fry made his first team debut for Boro on the opening day of last season, and not only that - he went on to claim the man of the match award as his side played out a goalless draw.

His achievements have also received recognition too, with Fry being called up for the England U17, U18, U19, and most recently the U20 sides.

First team boss Aitor Karanka rewarded the local-born centre back in September of last year, as he put pen to paper on a five-year contract with the club.
