BARMBY SCORES IN UNDER-18 DEFEAT

17 October 2016

The Iron’s Under-18 side were beaten 2-1 in their away clash with Burton Albion on Saturday.

George Barmby got the away side’s only goal of the game, as they lost to the league leaders.

Academy manager Tony Daws felt that on another day things could have gone differently, but stated the Brewers were stern opposition.

“It was a tough game on Saturday. In my opinion Burton Albion are the best team we’ve played so far,” said Daws.

“I don’t know if we caught them on a good day, or whether they caught us on an off day. From our point of view, we never really got going in the way that we can.

“We had a couple of chances. George Barmby had an opportunity 13 seconds into the game, where he went through on goal and tried to lob the goalkeeper, but unfortunately he put it just over the crossbar.

“There were chances for us late on and, if I’m being honest, we maybe could have got a draw out of it. However, take nothing away from Burton because they were a good side and a real test for us.”

Daws believes going forward the signs are positive, and added that it’s just a case of tweaking one or two things.

“We’ve lost three league games now, and each one of those has been against the top three. They’ve been against Mansfield where we lost 1-0, Notts County away where we lost 2-1 and obviously Saturday too,” he said.

“We’re very competitive and in each game we feel that we’ve deserved to take something. The boys are doing good at the minute.

“As a group we just need to score more goals. We don’t let too many in, we’re just not scoring enough and it’s a big part of the game we’re trying to work on at the minute.”

Iron lineup: Kelsey, McMichael, Butroid, Porter (Allasan, 75), Lilley, Sackey, Busby, Hornshaw, Dean-Atkinson, Barmby (Train, 88), Sithole.
Substitutes: Ablett, Riches.
