Iron goalkeeper Luke Daniels has called for another big performance, as he and his teammates head to Port Vale looking to keep up the impressive start to the new campaign.
The only time United haven't taken maximum points in the league so far this season was a 2-2 draw at Fleetwood Town (where the Iron came back from 2-0 down), and Daniels knows everyone will have to be at their best to win at Vale Park.“It’s back to the main business of the league. We know we’ve started well, and we need to maintain that if we’re going to be challenging,” he told The Iron PlayerHD.
“We know Saturday is going to be another tough game, as it was a tough game there last season. So hopefully we can go one better than last year, and get the win.
“Port Vale are usually a tough team to break down and beat. It’s one of them where we go there knowing we’re capable of getting a result, and it’s a game we’re looking forward to.”
United suffered a midweek loss in the second round of the EFL Cup, going out 2-1 against Bristol City - albeit in extra time.
The 28-year-old isn’t reading too much into the loss however and, if anything, he’s more optimistic after pushing the Championship side all the way.
“We came up against a very good side but I think, once we got a foothold into the game, we gave a good account of ourselves,” he stated.
"In the end we could have nicked it. It wasn’t to be in the end, but there are still positives to take from the game.
“It’s another thing we can take confidence from. We’ve started the season well and again, the result was disappointing, but there were positives for sure.”
Scunthorpe’s two most recent league matches couldn’t have been in more stark contrast to each other, with a battling 2-1 victory at AFC Wimbledon subsequently followed by a free-flowing 5-0 success over Gillingham at Glanford Park.
In Daniels’ eyes, that’s very encouraging, and he stated that it shows the squad is adaptable.
He explained: “At times we haven’t played really well in certain parts of the games, so to still be unbeaten in the league and know that we’ve got more to come is really pleasing. It does give us confidence going into the games.
“It’d be lovely to be able to win 5-0 every week, but it’s not going to happen. We’re going to have to go to places like AFC Wimbledon, where they’re shelling balls into our box for the majority of the game.
“Over the last few weeks we have shown that we can grind the tough results out and get the hard earned points, as well as come here on a nice sunny day, pass it around, and make it look easy.”
