Iron manager Graham Alexander was pleased his side progressed further in their preparations for the new campaign following their 2-1 victory over Rotherham United.
Scunthorpe beat the Millers courtesy of goals from Kevin van Veen and substitute Josh Morris either side of Richard Wood's equaliser."I was happy with the performance. It was an improvement again," he told The Iron PlayerHD.
"I thought the physical output of the team was superb. They really stretched themselves and it was the first 90 minutes for a few of those boys and they showed a fantastic attitude and really looked strong towards the end.
"We played some good, incisive football today and it is another step forward to the start of the season. That's what we are looking for - nothing more, nothing less.
"There was a great will to win and the mentality was there, but it is still pre-season so we need to make sure we come into work tomorrow and look to improve again."
With a trip to Victoria Park to face Hartlepool United on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) the only remaining pre-season fixture for Alexander's men, he's keen to continue the side's progression with the Bristol Rovers game just around the corner.
"The results are secondary at this point, but you still have to have that will to win," he continued.
"We're looking for the performances that will win games in League One and we're getting towards that level and Saturday's game will be another tough test but another one we want to improve in."
Van Veen netted the game's opener before having to be substituted after sustaining a cut to his eye. The United boss issued an update on the Dutchman, striker Paddy Madden and new signing Sam Mantom.
"We're trying to building Kevin up to be the player we want him to be," he stated.
"We handed him his second start in a short period of time and he got a goal to get off the mark before he got the injury which is great. He's beginning to gather what we and his team requires from him.
"He's got a little cut to his eye, but he's a big lad and will be okay. He will be back in training tomorrow.
"Paddy is the same as he was and we're judging it day-by-day. He's probably still a doubt for the start of the season.
"Sam is back out on the grass which is a massive positive for us. Hopefully, if everything goes to plan, we will hopefully have him back in full training in the next seven days."
