Irish striker Paddy Madden believes his side could take plenty of positives moving forward, after the Iron brushed aside Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium on Saturday.
United dominated from the off, but didn’t find their first goal until the 49th minute, through that all familiar format of a Josh Morris free-kick.
The Iron then went in search of a second and got it through Kevin van Veen with 30 left to play. He was played down the left by Duane Holmes, before smashing home with his left foot.
The points were then sealed by substitute Sam Mantom, who latched onto a lofted ball through from van Veen, and then placed it delicately past Ryan Fulton in the Spireites net.
“We can take a lot of positives out of that,” Madden told The Iron PlayerHD.
“We took our foot off the gas a little on Tuesday and it gave us the little kick up the backside that we needed.
“That was a great response by us, to get back to winning ways.”
The loss to Oldham on Tuesday night may have been a low point in the season thus far, but Madden was keen to reiterate that it’s a sign of a good team when you can bounce back immediately from the upset of a defeat of that manner.
“Every team is going to have a bad performance; you can’t play well every time. We try to, but we know we may have off days like we did on Tuesday," he continued.
“It’s a sign of a good team when you bounce back to win comfortably like we did today, so we just need to make sure we don’t our foot off the gas too many times.”
United were left frustrated in the first half, as they did everything but find the net. Madden raced through on goal late on in the half, and described that chance as a great save from the keeper.
“I think we dominated from the start-to-finish. The keeper has made it hard for me there," he said.
“Usually as a striker when you’re through one-on-one you’re waiting for the keeper to make the first move, but he stood up tall and narrowed the angle for me.”
There were three different scorers on the day, and this is something the Irishman believes shows the quality the Iron have all over the pitch.
“It’s good to have goals coming from all over the park, and it gives us confidence as a team. We’ll enjoy ourselves tonight and go again next Saturday.”
In the absence of Scott Wiseman and Jordan Clarke, Levi Sutton was given his first league start for the club. The youngster was calm and composed throughout the match, and Madden claimed he deserved a lot of credit for his mature performance.
“Levi deserved his chance. He works hard every day in training and I’m delighted he got his chance," he stated.
“The players in the squad know what Levi can do, so it’s important now that he keeps going, and I think he’ll have a good career in the game.”
There were around 1,200 fans at the Proact supporting United, and the 26-year-old wanted to thank the supporters for coming out in their numbers and giving them the edge on the day.
“There was a good away following today, and we’re going to need that all season.
“The fans are very much important, and we need that 12th man to spur us on and keep us going during games.
“They were magnificent and a lot of credit must go to the fans that travelled. I’m just glad we turned it around from Tuesday and gave them something to celebrate on a Saturday night.”
