Clarke: Our main focus is getting as many points as possible

Partnering Jacob Bedeau, the skipper has played there for the last two-and-a-half games after coming on as a substitute for Harrison McGahey at Salford City a week-and-a-half ago.

Looking ahead to Tuesday's match against the Latics, the 29-year-old says it's important his side get back to winning ways on home turf.

He said: “We need to get back to being comfortable at home and picking up the points because this is our ground and teams used to be worried about coming here. However, our main focus is to just start picking up the points and get as many as possible.

“We need those points to make us feel a little bit more comfortable. I feel like we will be absolutely fine but why not get the points now rather than later.”

Reflecting on Saturday's 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient, which was just the Iron's fourth of the season, he commented: “I think we were disappointed to not take all three points, I feel it was a good performance, especially in the second half. We were the more dominant team in possession then and we were very solid as well.

“There were some poor decisions that went against us, so we're disappointed in those aspects. In the end, we came away with a point so we can’t be too upset. I think there were some key blocks, saves and last-minute tackles when needed but they weren’t needed that often. We just have to make sure we concentrate from set-pieces because other than that we felt comfortable.”

He added: “We felt we were playing well from the back and getting up the pitch, and getting into difficult areas to cause them problems but maybe on another day we take some chances and they go our way.”

Focusing on the next game against Oldham on Tuesday night, he said: “Oldham are a dangerous side when they are on good form, as are any of the teams in the league. When we went to their place and that was my first game back, I wasn’t match fit but we played well and dealt with what they threw at us and we ended up winning the game 2-0.

“Hopefully, we can win again. It is going to be a new manager and a different vibe for them but we have to deal with the dangerous aspects of their game. Other than that, we need to build on the good performances we have been putting in recently.”

Following well-documented injury problems, Clarke could make his 20th appearance since mid-November on Tuesday evening, and he said: “I’m feeling good. It’s the most games I’ve played in a very long time and like I said when I first started back playing, that’s the aim. I’ve been doing all the things I need to outside of football, apart from sleeping as well as I'd like because the baby keeps me up, but I’ve been making sure I’m doing things right and I’m available.”
