Lund pleased to be back involved following suspension and illness

31 December 2019

Back from suspension and then illness, midfielder Matthew Lund praised Crewe Alexandra as the Iron fell to a 3-1 defeat at the Alexandra Stadium.

The 29-year-old credited the opponents as the best side he’s faced this season.

He told iFollow Iron: “It was a difficult game. They were a good side, probably the best we’ve played this year.

“They were very well drilled and you could tell they’d been playing with each other for a while. They passed the ball well and we struggled to deal with them at times.”

Lee Novak pulled one back for United at 2-1 but Daniel Powell restored the hosts’ two-goal advantage minutes later.

“When we did get in their faces, we looked better. When you get a goal against a young side, you think you’ve got a chance,” he said.

“We had a chance and then they went up the other side and scored. It was a soft goal so it was disappointing.”

Lund returned to the side after missing the Boxing Day clash with Walsall through illness, and the previous three matches through suspension, but said he feels much better now.

He said: “I was really badly ill last week. I felt terrible so I missed last week. It’s good to be back in the team. There are a lot of games coming up so hopefully I can get myself in the team again.”

The Iron travel to Oldham Athletic on New Year’s Day and the midfielder hopes the Iron can kickstart another run against the Latics.

“The last two games haven’t been great but we need to pick ourselves up and get on another good run," he said.

“We’ve got to get ourselves right for New Year’s Day. They were another good footballing side when we played them earlier on in the season. We’ve just got to go there and give it our all.”
