In Review: September 2017

31 May 2018

We continue our look back at the 2017-18 season, with the Iron beginning September in sixth position following two wins and two draws from four matches.

The side had exited the Carabao Cup in the opening month of the campaign, but in the second round, but had registered three points in the group stage of the Checkatrade Trophy.

BURY 0-1 IRON (Josh Morris)

Scunthorpe United: Gilks, Townsend, Wallace, Ojo, Madden (van Veen, 78’), Morris, Bishop, Hopper (Novak, 70), Adelakun (Holmes, 70), Sutton, McArdle.

Josh Morris popped up with another match winning free-kick at Gigg Lane for the second successive campaign as he steered the ball past former 'keeper Joe Murphy to seal a 1-0 win.

IRON 0-0 BLACKPOOL

Scunthorpe United: Gilks, Townsend, Wallace, Ojo, Madden (van Veen 79'), Morris, Bishop, Hopper (Novak 66'), Adelakun (Holmes 66'), Sutton, McArdle.

United registered a goalless draw against Blackpool at Glanford Park in what was described as a game with "few clear-cut chances".

A draw was probably a fair outcome, although Matt Gilks did make one stand-out save against his former club, while Lee Novak had the best chance for the Iron.

IRON 0-1 BLACKBURN ROVERS (Marcus Antonsson)

Scunthorpe United: Gilks, Townsend, Wallace, Ojo, Madden, Morris, Bishop (van Veen, 80’), Novak, Holmes (Adelakun, 65’), Sutton (Clarke, 69’), McArdle.

Substitute Marcus Antonsson came off the bench to net with his first touch, handing Rovers maximum points against the Iron.

United played some of their best football in the campaign so far, but failed to break down the Blackburn defence and were left without anything to show from their endeavours.

DONCASTER ROVERS 0-1 IRON (Lee Novak)

Scunthorpe United: Gilks, Clarke, Townsend, Wallace, Ojo (Burgess, 90’), Madden (Hopper, 74’) , Morris, Bishop, Novak, Holmes (Mantom, 69’), McArdle (c).

The Iron got back to winning ways with a derby day victory away at Doncaster Rovers.

Lee Novak notched his first for the club, heading in a Josh Morris corner after just ten minutes, with Scunthorpe holding out for the three points and a clean sheet.

Scunthorpe United: Gilks, Clarke, Wallace, Ojo, Madden (Burgess, 84’), Morris, Bishop, Novak (Hopper, 54’), Holmes (Mantom, 79’), McArdle, Butroid.

Just like London buses, Novak was on target once more as he swept home a low cross from the right, as the Iron took the lead on the way to back-to-back victories.

Duane Holmes netted a controlled volley into the corner to make it 2-0 at half time to Scunthorpe, who produced a brilliant opening 45 minutes to seal the victory.
