The kind of game you want to play in

6 May 2017

United defender Conor Townsend is eagerly anticipating Sunday’s Sky Bet League One play-off semi-final second leg clash with Millwall at Glanford Park.

Townsend says fixtures like these don’t come around very often and, when they do, you’ve got to make sure you emerge victorious.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Townsend said: “It’s the kind of game you want to be playing in.

“When you start as a professional you want to play in the big games, you want to be involved in the play-offs, and big cup matches.

‘It’s a chance to test yourself in the big atmospheres. I’m looking forward to it, and hopefully we can get it done.”

The 24-year-old feels the Iron are well placed heading into the game, following what he felt was a well deserved draw in the reverse match on Thursday night.

“We all spoke about how tough a place it is to go, and you could see it was a tough place with the atmosphere,” he explained.

“We defended very well, and we went to win. However, we didn’t manage to do that, so the main thing was not to concede.

“The worst thing that could have happened was us going down there, getting beat and having a mountain to climb on Sunday night.

“It’s now all to play for, which is what we wanted, so hopefully we can be better as a team and get the result.”

However he states it’s now up to United to take the game to the visitors, following what was a cagey affair during the week.

He’s confident in doing just that, because of the impressive run of form which the squad has been on of late.

“It’s of course a knock-out tie now with it being at this stage of the season, and it’s a massive game and occasion,” Townsend stated.

“However, we’re just looking to play how we have been doing in the last ten games and carry that forward.

“I don’t think we were as good as we can be on Thursday with the ball. There’s a lot more to come from us, and hopefully we can show that.”

Townsend and his team-mates will be backed by a bumper home crowd on Sunday, and the full-back declared to have that support will only be a benefit.

“The fans have been good all season, and to pack Glanford Park is major,” he declared.

“We need those fans behind us, we need them pushing to get that extra five per cent out of us. It’ll be a good occasion, and all the lads are looking forward to it.”
