Listen Again: Chairman features on Sports Talk

27 June 2017

Iron chairman Peter Swann featured on BBC Radio Humberside’s Sports Talk show on Monday night, and fans can listen from 36 minutes in.

Here is a written version of the interview with the station’s Scunthorpe United reporter Mike White:

What are your thoughts on the new recruits so far?
PS: It’s fantastic. I know everybody was a little frustrated because we weren’t diving in (and making early signings), but we made contact and knew our targets. At the moment, we’ve got everyone who we’ve gone in for. We've been very patient and these players we were after have been recruited with respect of filling in the gaps which were left with the players who we lost last year and hopefully with improving the team, because we needed to be a little bit better. Defensively now, it looks fantastic and bringing Rory (McArdle) will give us a huge amount of experience in there. He will really drive us on. Cameron Burgess is another young centre-half who will benefit from the set-up we’ve got. These are exciting times. We’ve maybe got two or three more signings to come.

I’ve seen the name Jimmy Ryan mentioned. Is there anything in that?
PS: No, he is a great player but he’s not one of our targets for the summer.

Are you in advance talks with anyone at the moment?
PS: We’ve been in advance talks with everybody we’ve needed to go for. It’s just standing our ground a little bit. We have to be careful we don’t pay over the odds, but we have to pay the right price for the right player and they have to want to come to Scunthorpe. The one thing that is certainly apparent this year is, because we finished third last year, a lot of players are looking at us as an ambitious club who want to get into the Championship. From day one for me, for a lot of players to look at us now as an ambitious club who are pointing the way forward, that is an absolute success. I’m delighted when we talk to players that they understand we’re not just here to make up the numbers, we want to challenge next year and go one better. We have the players now who will take us forward, and will hopefully add to that.
