RESERVES BEATEN BY POOLS

25 September 2013

The Iron's reserve side suffered their second successive league defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by a strong Hartlepool United outfit.

Captain Callum Howe scored the Iron’s goal in the 82nd minute as his downward header looped over the Hartlepool goalkeeper from Hakeeb Adelakun’s back post corner.

In the following minute, United came close to drawing level and rescuing a point in sensational circumstances.

Substitute Curtis Bateson picked the ball up 30 yards from goal before he let a right-footed drive go, but his connection only wasn’t as clean as he intended and the ball sailed over the bar.

The opening exchanges of the contest were even with both sides creating clear cut chances. Kyle Wootton skipped past a defender but his final touch let him down when he was one-on-one with the goalkeeper, whilst Jordan Richards blazed the ball over James Severn’s crossbar.

With Russ Wilcox’s side struggling to break down the Pools defence early on they altered their tactics and started to play route one. That almost paid off instantly as Luke Waterfall’s long hopeful ball found Kyle Wootton, however, he was unable to control the ball and it skidded off his shin and out of play.

Hartlepool opened the scoring on 27 minutes when James Poole, a regular in the first team last season, thumped the ball past a helpless Severn after the Iron defence conceded possession on the edge of their own box.

Adelakun could have levelled for the Iron instantly but his central free kick 35 yards out sailed over the crossbar without troubling Andy Rafferty in the Pools goal.

The home side had another chance to extend their lead just minutes into the second half as they made a break down the right-wing.

Greg Rutherford played in a low near-post cross which was met by Nialle Rodney but Waterfall was on hand to block the effort at close range and send the ball behind for a corner.

Midway through the second half Hartlepool doubled their lead against the run of play.

Zak Boagey seized upon some poor Iron defending on the right-wing before unleashing a fierce shot from the edge of the area which flew past Severn, with the aid of a deflection.

With 15 minutes of the game reamining Iron striker Jamie Wootton was forced off the pitch after colliding with Lewis Hawkins as both players attempted to win the ball back for their respective sides.

His replacement, Billy Beresford, was instantly involved in the action as he lined up a free kick on the edge of the box, which was just off centre.

He got the ball over the wall but Rafferty sprung across his goal line to catch the ball and preserve Hartlepool’s two goal lead at the time.

After Howe halved the home side’s lead, Pool were content to keep hold of the ball, ensuring they saw out the remaining minutes and secured all three points.
