JUNIORS LOSE 3-2 AT BURTON

7 September 2013

The Iron's youth team suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 3-2 at Burton Albion.

The away team went 1-0 down after four minutes when a long ball over the top caused indecision between the Iron's back four and the goalkeeper, and Burton took the opportunity to take the lead.

Levi Sutton had a good chance to level on six minutes but his header found the hands of the home goalkeeper.

On 20 minutes, an excellent run and cross from Hakeeb Adelakun found Kyle Wootton who blasted home to level.

On 26 minutes, Wootton thought that he had scored when he headed home from a Billy Beresford corner but his effort cannoned back into play off the crossbar.

However, on 33 minutes, Wootton made no mistake when he finished well from another Beresford corner to give Iron a half time lead.

On the hour, Burton equalised. A free-kick was awarded against Zak Cowling 25 yards out and the free kick nestled in the bottom corner of Pat Weaver's goal.

United responded instantly and Adelakun's long range effort beat the goalkeeper but no-one was on hand to put the ball away as it struck the bottom of the post.

The Iron were piling on the pressure and Beresford's corner struck the crossbar.

United's corners were causing real problems for the home team who had to clear the ball from under their own crossbar on three occasions.

On 75 minutes, United were slow to deal with a Burton attack and the resulting cross was turned in at the far post to leave the Iron chasing the game.

Unfortunately, they couldn't quite notch the goal they deserved.

After the game, youth development officer Tony Daws said: "At times on the day we played some really good football and perhaps deserved to score more goals.

"However, as a team, we have to defend better as the goals that we conceded should have been prevented."
