IRON HAMMER MARINERS

28 September 2013

The Iron's youth team won 5-0 against Grimsby Town at Glanford Park this morning.

The local derby saw the return of influential striker Curtis Bateson, after six weeks out with an ankle ligament injury that was sustained in the reserves' win at Hull City.

However, there was also some bad news for the academy when it was revealed that U16 talent Noel Burdett would be out of action for four-to-six weeks with a knee ligament injury picked up in the last youth team game.

Scunthorpe started the game well and almost went in front on four minutes when Hakeeb Adelakun twisted one way, then the other, before unleashing a rocketed shot that was somehow blocked by the Grimsby defence as it arrowed to the top corner of the goal.

Levi Sutton was next to go close as his long range effort saw Bostock in the Town goal having to go full stretch to tip the ball over for a corner.

On the half hour mark, the home team took the lead that their early play warranted and it was the returning Bateson doing the damage.

He picked the ball up on the left side and used his pace to glide past the Town defence and his shot took a deflection as the ball found the back of the net to register his sixth strike in all games this season.

On the stroke of half time, it was his strike partner Kyle Wootton who nudged the Iron further in front.

Excellent quick passing and good combination play by United gave Wootton the time and space to pick his spot and he dispatched his effort into the bottom corner of the goal from 16 yards out to give the Iron a commanding half time lead and register goal number six in the last six youth games and thirteen for the season.

United started the second half where they had left off before the break and it was Bateson again going close on 50 minutes, electing to try to beat the goalkeeper at the near post when team mates were available in the centre.

Zac Cowling did well to get forward just after this and he too shot near post when perhaps it would have been better to square the ball across the box to team mates up in support.

United were dominating the game and it was virtually one way traffic but at this stage the home team couldn't quite find the third goal that would kill off the game as chances were going missing as Town hung on.

The breakthrough came on 74 minutes though.

United made a quick attacking move down the right wing and midfielder Levi Sutton was on hand to whip his shot home from 20 yards out to make it 3-0 after good play and a cut back from the dangerous Bateson.

Two minutes later, United scored again to go four goals in front when Bateson picked the ball up left side.

He evaded tackles in the box before curling his right-footed shot into the far side of the visitors' goal, giving Bostock, the visiting goalkeeper, no chance at all.

Billy Beresford rounded off the scoring on 80 minutes when Adelakun swept past players on his charge goalwards and he unselfishly slid the ball to the unmarked Beresford who shot home comfortably.

"It was an excellent all round performance from the team and it was very enjoyable to watch them play," said youth development officer Tony Daws.
