YOUTHS THRASH MAGPIES

12 October 2013

The Iron's youth team ran out 4-1 winners at Notts County on Saturday morning.

They threatened to go ahead in the opening minute, when Levi Sutton broke clear and had a one-against-one with the goalkeeper in the fifth minute, but he fired straight at the goalkeeper from the edge of the box when he perhaps could have advanced to open the scoring.

However, excellent quick passing saw Scunthorpe take the lead in the tenth minute. Curtis Bateson and Kyle Wootton combined to send Hakeeb Adelakun clear and he made no mistake, slotting past the goalkeeper from ten yards, much to the delight of his team-mates.

United were on top and really dictating the game but they had to be alert as County tried to get back into it, forcing a couple of corners and free-kicks.

Scunthorpe's sharp passing and quick movement was creating goalscoring opportunities, and it was from some slick play that they went two goals up in the 39th minute.

Adelakun combined with Bateson, whose back-heel was perfect, and Adelakun's shot was parried straight into the path of top scorer Wootton, who slotted in from close range.

The Iron were cutting through the home team time and time again, and went three goals ahead on 44 minutes - effectively sealing the game.

Jake Hood got the final touch to prod home an excellent corner from skipper Connor Smythe.

For United in the second half it was a case of carrying on where they left off, and the youngsters had chances to stretch the lead further until County pulled one back much against the run of play on the hour mark.

The visitors were caught cold by a quick throw-in down their right and the home side were lifted as they pulled one back.

However, on 89 minutes, Scunthorpe added a fourth to seal the game, and schoolboy striker Declan Howe - brother of former youth team captain and current young United professional Callum - notched it.

U16 player Sam Fewkes slotted the ball out wide to Adelakun, who drifted past three players before unleashing a trademark rocket of a shot which the Magpies goalkeeper couldn't hold. Howe followed up to finish first time and record his first goal for the youth team.

Academy manager Tony Daws said: "We were forced into making three changes due to illness to Taron Hare and injuries to Billy Beresford and our goalkeeper Pat Weaver.

"On top of that, both Kyle Wootton and Levi Sutton were under the weather - having been ill all week and not being able to train as a result.

"However, this presented opportunities to some of the other players and to some of the schoolboys and, once again, the boys all contributed to an excellent team performance and result."

United's youth team have now scored 12 goals in their last three games.
