YOUTHS WIN AT ROVERS

9 November 2013

Scunthorpe's youth team won 3-2 at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday morning.

Rovers hit back on 80 minutes to reduce the deficit and they really turned up the pressure in the final ten minutes but the away team managed to see the game through to the final whistle and secure a 3-2 win.

Within two minutes an identical move saw Wootton once again through with the Rovers keeper to beat but this time he opted to square the ball to strike partner Bateson who made no mistake as he notched the visitors' third goal.

Four minutes later, midfielder Jacob Hood split the home team defence to find Wootton clear and bearing down on goal but the goal getter was a little slow to pull the trigger and Rovers made a last ditch tackle to clear the ball.

The resulting free kick saw United keeper Hawley scrambling across his goal as the ball struck the post and rebounded to safety.

Rovers almost levelled on 64 minutes when Mawson fouled and gave a free-kick away on the edge of the Iron's box.

Five minutes after the restart, United went close again when Wootton headed over.

As the ball was headed over the stranded away keeper Hawley and about to cross the goal-line, central defender Jack Bowskin showed outstanding commitment and desire and against all odds he managed to recover and acrobatically hook the ball off the line to send his team in at half time with their lead in tact.

Smythe made good ground down the Iron left, advancing along the goal line before picking out Wootton, who slotted the ball home to put United in front.

Rovers attacked centrally on 35 minutes and a long ball over United's back four caught the Iron out again.

On 32 minutes, Wootton was clean through with former Iron trialist Joe Green to beat in the home team goal but the usually clinical striker held his head in his hands when he put his effort wide of the post.

Rovers were proving to be difficult opposition for the Iron's youngsters and were dangerous forcing corners and free kicks that the away team gave away too often as Hawley's goal was threatened.

Wootton had a free header on 15 minutes when he met a corner from captain Connor Smythe but the big striker couldn't keep his header below the bar.

United's response was immediate and they levelled on 11 minutes through first year striker Jack Mawson notching his second goal in two games after excellent passing play between Connor Purdue and Bateson.

Iron goalkeeper Ryan Hawley was well off his line as he managed to tip the shot onto the crossbar, but it was Doncaster who reacted the quickest as Terrell nodded the ball home to give the home team the lead.

On eight minutes, a throughball for Rovers caught the United defenders out.

Fellow frontman Kyle Wootton played the industrious Bateson a perfect through ball and United's number ten saw his low drive rebound to safety off the bottom of the home team's post.

The Iron started the local derby well and should have taken an early lead on two minutes through striker Curtis Bateson.

"Defensively we continue give too many free kicks away and this is something that we need to address as a team as quickly as possible but overall we are very pleased with the teams performance."

Academy manager Tony Daws said: "It is always a tough game against Doncaster and today was no different. I felt that at times we played some very good football but we need to be more effective in front of goal as we created two or three good chances that we should have taken.
