YOUTHS DRAW AT BRADFORD

2 November 2013

The Iron's youth team drew 2-2 away at league leaders Bradford City on Saturday morning.

The Bantams had won ten out of ten games so far this campaign prior to having the run ended by Scunthorpe.

Both sides created chances that could have been taken as Bradford went close from numerous set plays, while the Iron caused them problems with their quick incisive passing.

On 41 minutes, the away side took the lead. It started with a last-ditch sliding tackle from Zac Cowling, which prevented a certain goal for the home team.

The visitors counter-attacked at pace, passing the ball quickly and accurately up the pitch before Kyle Wootton dispatched his left-footed past the Bantams 'keeper to give United the lead.

Right on the stroke of half-time, Curtis Bateson found Wootton in the box but the striker couldn't keep his header below the bar as the Iron went into half time with a one goal advantage.

United had to clear a City corner off the line as the league leaders tried to get back into the game but it was the Iron who almost went two goals up on 66 minutes when Bateson cut inside only to see his rocket cannon down off the crossbar before being scrambled to safety as the away team forced the play.

On 75 minuntes, United set up to defend another long throw from the City captain but this time it went short before the resulting cross was turned in to level the scores.

With only five minutes remaining, United took the lead again, when Jack Bowskin - forward for a corner - found first year striker Jack Mawson, who drilled his shot home from a tight angle.

City were then reduced to 10 men when Hepworth was sent off for dissent.

With 92 minutes on the clock, United had good possession in midfield but Bateson over-ran the ball and was dispossessed. Mawson then gave a free-kick away on the halfway line.

City packed the penalty box with height and, as the long high ball came in, it caused indecision for the Iron and - just as the ball appeared to be running out - City pulled the ball back to tap home the equaliser.

Within seconds of United kicking off, the referee blew the final whistle to end an enthralling game.

After the game, academy manager Tony Daws said: "Bradford are a very good team and have been unstoppable this season, beating everyone in sight.

"Our boys were outstanding today and the players and staff are all absolutely gutted because not only did we play extremely well feel that we deserved to win the game.

"However, from a development process there were a lot of positives to take from the game both individually and from the team perspective."
